About This Destination

Tarangire National Park is defined by two things above all others: ancient baobab trees that punctuate the landscape like sentinels, and the largest elephant population of any park in Tanzania's northern circuit. Named after the Tarangire River, which becomes the region's only reliable water source during the dry season, the park draws enormous concentrations of wildlife between June and October, when herds migrate in from the surrounding plains to drink.

Wildlife & Highlights

Elephant herds numbering in the hundreds gather along the riverbanks in the dry season, often visible digging for water in the sandy riverbed. Tarangire is also one of the best parks in Tanzania for spotting fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, and greater kudu, species rarely seen elsewhere on the northern circuit. Its swamps attract over 550 recorded bird species, making it a serious draw for birdwatchers, while its baobab-st ridgelines are among the most photographed landscapes in East Africa. Tree-climbing lions and large pythons are also occasionally spotted in the park's dense acacia woodland.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from June to October is the definitive time to visit Tarangire, when animals concentrate along the river in numbers that rival any park on the continent. The wet season, from November to May, sees wildlife disperse across a much wider area, but rewards visitors with newborn animals, migratory birds, and a dramatically greener, less crowded park.

Getting There

Tarangire is the closest major park to Arusha, roughly a 90-minute to two-hour drive, making it a common first or last stop on a northern circuit safari. It is often combined with Lake Manyara National Park, which lies just beyond it on the same road toward the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti.
