Discover Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Trekking
About This Destination
Gombe Stream National Park is Tanzania's smallest national park, a narrow strip of forested hillside rising from the shore of Lake Tanganyika, but its scientific significance far outweighs its size. This is where Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking chimpanzee research in 1960, work that fundamentally changed how science understands primate behavior and continues today as one of the longest-running wildlife studies in the world.
Wildlife & Highlights
Gombe's habituated chimpanzee communities, descendants of the individuals Goodall first studied, allow visitors an unusually close and well-documented wildlife encounter, tracked on foot through steep forest trails with experienced guides. Beyond chimpanzees, the park shelters olive baboon, red colobus, and a rich array of forest birds, while Lake Tanganyika's clear water at the park's edge offers a scenic and refreshing counterpoint to the humid forest above.

Best Time to Visit
The dry season, June to October, offers the easiest hiking conditions for chimpanzee trekking, while the wet season provides softer trails but denser, more challenging forest cover.
Getting There
Gombe Stream is reached only by boat from Kigoma, a scenic one to two hour journey across Lake Tanganyika, since no roads connect directly to the park.
