Discover Saadani National Park Beach Safari
About This Destination
Saadani National Park is unique among Tanzania's protected areas as the only one bordering the Indian Ocean, a stretch of coastline where savanna wildlife and a working fishing village exist alongside genuine beach scenery. It is a small, low-key park by Tanzanian standards, but its combination of wildlife and coastline offers an experience found nowhere else in the country.
Wildlife & Highlights
Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and lion move through Saadani's coastal bush, occasionally visible from the beach itself, a genuinely unusual sight for a safari destination. Boat safaris along the Wami River, which forms part of the park's boundary, reveal hippo, crocodile, and a strong variety of water birds, while the nearby historic village of Saadani, once an important 19th-century trading and slave-trade port, adds cultural and historical texture to a visit.
- Tanzania's only national park with an Indian Ocean beachfront
- Historic Saadani village, a former Swahili coast trading port
- A rare pairing of savanna wildlife and genuine beach scenery
Best Time to Visit
June to October and December to February offer the driest, sunniest conditions for combining game viewing with beach time, while the long rains from March to May are quieter but wetter.
Getting There
Saadani is reached by a roughly four-hour drive from Dar es Salaam or a short scheduled flight, making it a feasible add-on for travelers looking to combine a brief safari with coastal relaxation without traveling as far as Zanzibar.
