Best Time to Visit Tanzania
Tanzania offers year-round safari experiences, but the best time depends on what you want to see:
Dry Season (June – October): Peak safari season. Wildlife concentrates around water sources. The Great Migration river crossings happen in July–September.
Green Season (November – May): Fewer crowds, lush landscapes, calving season in January–February, and lower rates.
What to Pack
Pack light — most camps offer laundry services.
- Neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, beige)
- Warm fleece for early morning game drives
Health & Safety
Tanzania is generally safe for tourists, but taking precautions ensures a worry-free trip:
Vaccinations: Yellow Fever (required from endemic areas), Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid. Consult your travel doctor 6 weeks before departure.
Malaria: Antimalarial medication is recommended. Pack DEET-based repellent and use mosquito nets.
Travel Insurance: Comprehensive coverage including medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
Currency & Payments
The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is local currency, but US Dollars are widely accepted for tourism.
- Credit cards accepted at major hotels (Visa/Mastercard)
- ATMs available in Arusha and towns — not in parks
Safari Etiquette
- Stay in the vehicle unless told otherwise
Cultural Awareness
Tanzania has over 120 ethnic groups. Showing respect goes a long way:
- "Jambo" (hello) and "Asante" (thank you) are always appreciated
- Ask permission before photographing people
- Dress modestly in towns — cover shoulders and knees
- Use your right hand when giving or receiving items
- Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim — dress conservatively
