Discover Mahale Mountains Chimpanzee Safaris
About This Destination
Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the most remote and least-visited parks in Tanzania, a roadless wilderness on the shore of Lake Tanganyika reachable only by boat or light aircraft. That isolation has kept Mahale wild in a way few other parks in Africa can match, combining serious chimpanzee trekking with white-sand lake beaches and the kind of silence that comes only from genuine remoteness.
Wildlife & Highlights
- One of Africa's largest habituated wild chimpanzee populations
- White-sand beaches on Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest freshwater lake
- Genuine remoteness, with no roads connecting to the rest of Tanzania
- Snorkeling among Lake Tanganyika's endemic cichlid fish
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, May to October, offers the best chimpanzee trekking conditions and clearest lake water. The wet season sees fewer visitors but softer, more difficult forest trails.
Getting There
Mahale is reached by scheduled light aircraft to a nearby airstrip followed by a boat transfer, or by a longer boat journey from Kigoma, since the park has no road access at all.
