Experience Overview
This day tour is the easiest way to see Zanzibar's history and one of its most charming islands in a single outing. Your guide leads you on foot through Stone Town, the old Swahili trading town that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, explaining the carved Zanzibari doors, the Sultan's palaces, the Old Fort and the story of the East African slave trade at the Anglican cathedral built over the last slave market.
After the market, a wooden boat takes you 30 minutes offshore to Prison Island (Changuu). Built as a prison in the 1890s and later used as a quarantine station, it is now home to a colony of giant Aldabra tortoises, some well over a hundred years old. There is time to snorkel on the reef or relax on the island's small beach before returning to Stone Town.

Day 1 · Stone Town and Prison Island
Pick-up from your hotel in the morning for a two-to-three-hour walking tour of Stone Town: the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the Anglican cathedral and slave-trade memorial, and the Darajani spice and fish market. At midday, take a boat from the Stone Town beach to Prison Island to meet the giant tortoises, explore the old prison buildings and snorkel on the reef, returning to Stone Town in the afternoon and to your hotel.
