Arusha is Tanzania's undisputed safari capital, the city where nearly every northern circuit journey begins and ends. Set at the foot of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak, Arusha combines a working East African city with easy access to some of the continent's most celebrated national parks, making it the natural base for travelers preparing to head into the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, or Kilimanjaro.

Best Time to Visit

Arusha is a year-round destination since it functions primarily as a gateway city, but travelers typically time their stay around the northern circuit's dry season, June to October, or the calving season around Ngorongoro and the southern Serengeti, December to March. Mount Meru climbers generally avoid the long rains of March to May.

Getting There

Arusha is served by Kilimanjaro International Airport, roughly 45 minutes from the city center, with regular international connections, as well as the smaller Arusha Airport used for domestic light-aircraft transfers into the parks. From Arusha, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are reached by road in three to six hours, or by a short scheduled flight.
