Experience Overview
The Machame route, often called the 'Whiskey route', is the most popular way up Kilimanjaro for good reason. It climbs from the south-west through rainforest and moorland to the Shira Plateau, then traverses beneath the Southern Icefields, giving you the widest variety of scenery of any route.
The seven-day schedule is the one we recommend: the day over the Lava Tower (4,630 m) and down to Barranco follows the 'climb high, sleep low' principle, and the extra night at Karanga Camp keeps the pace steady before the summit push from Barafu. You camp in quality mountain tents, with a cook, guides and porters looking after you, and descend via the Mweka route.

Itinerary
These are sample itineraries designed to inspire your journey. Each trip can be fully customized to match your travel style, preferences, and schedule. Use them as a starting point to craft your perfect safari experience.
Day 1 · Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800 m), register and meet your crew. Hike five to six hours through the rainforest to Machame Camp (2,835 m), where your tents are already set up.
Day 2 · Machame Camp to Shira Camp
A steep climb out of the forest through giant heather and along a rocky ridge onto the Shira Plateau, reaching Shira Camp (3,750 m) after four to six hours, with sunset views over Mount Meru.
Day 3 · Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Climb east through alpine desert to the Lava Tower (4,630 m) for lunch, then descend into the Barranco Valley, among giant groundsels, to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). About six to seven hours – a key acclimatization day.
Day 4 · Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Scramble up the Barranco Wall – steep but non-technical, and one of the highlights of the climb – then traverse below the Southern Icefields to Karanga Camp (3,995 m), about four to five hours.
Day 5 · Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A short climb of three to four hours over rocky alpine desert to Barafu Camp (4,673 m). Rest in the afternoon, eat an early dinner and get your gear ready for the summit night.
Day 6 · Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Set off around midnight and climb by headlamp to Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) for sunrise over the glaciers. Descend to Barafu for a rest and a meal, and continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m).
Day 7 · Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Descend three to four hours through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640 m), collect your summit certificate and say goodbye to your crew, then transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
