Discover Moshi, Kilimanjaro Gateway Town
About This Destination
Moshi is a relaxed coffee-growing town sitting directly beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, and it serves as the main staging point for climbers preparing to summit Africa's highest peak. With Kilimanjaro's snow-capped dome visible from the town on clear mornings, Moshi has grown into a hub of trekking outfitters, gear shops, and guesthouses catering to hikers arriving from around the world.
Wildlife & Highlights
Moshi's surrounding foothills are covered in coffee and banana plantations run by local Chagga farmers, and half-day coffee tours are one of the most popular non-trekking activities in the area, walking visitors through the process from bean to cup on family-run shambas. Waterfalls at Materuni and Marangu village, at the base of the Marangu Route, offer easy day hikes for travelers acclimatizing before a Kilimanjaro attempt or unwinding after one. The town itself, with its markets, cafes, and mix of Chagga, Maasai, and Swahili culture, gives visitors a grounded, unhurried introduction to northern Tanzania.
- The principal gateway town for Kilimanjaro climbs on the Marangu, Machame, and Rongai routes
- Chagga coffee farm tours through the surrounding foothills
- Materuni and Marangu waterfalls for easy acclimatization day hikes
- A more low-key, walkable alternative base to Arusha
Best Time to Visit
Moshi is pleasant year-round, but most visitors time their stay around Kilimanjaro's two climbing windows: January to mid-March and June to October, when trails are driest and summit success rates are highest. The long rains from mid-March to May see far fewer climbers and quieter trails for those visiting the town itself.
Getting There
Moshi is about 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport and roughly an hour from Arusha by road, making it an easy add-on before or after a northern circuit safari for travelers combining wildlife viewing with a Kilimanjaro trek.
