Overview
A relaxed two-day safari from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park, with an afternoon and a morning game drive on the Mkata floodplain and a night at a lodge near the park.
Experience Overview
Mikumi is the most accessible national park from Dar es Salaam, four to five hours' drive west on a paved road. Staying overnight rather than doing a day trip makes a real difference: you are in the park for the late afternoon and early morning, the best times to see predators, and you avoid doing the long drive twice in one day.
The open grassland of the Mkata floodplain is easy to explore and full of animals – elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, wildebeest, impala and hippos in the pools, with a good chance of lions. Evenings at the lodge are quiet, often with animal calls after dark.
