Experience Overview
Lemosho starts on the far western side of Kilimanjaro at Londorossi Gate, in quiet rainforest where you may meet few other climbers for the first two days. It then crosses the entire Shira Plateau – an ancient collapsed caldera with some of the best views on the mountain – before joining the southern circuit at the Lava Tower and continuing via Barranco, Karanga and Barafu to the summit.
With eight days, the ascent is gradual, and the extra night on the Shira Plateau makes Lemosho one of the routes with the highest summit success rates. It suits climbers who want scenery and solitude as well as a strong chance of standing on Uhuru Peak.

Itinerary

Day 1 · Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)
Drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate on the western side of the mountain to register, then continue to the Lemosho trailhead. Walk three to four hours through quiet rainforest, home to colobus monkeys, to Mti Mkubwa ('Big Tree') Camp.
Day 2 · Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,610m)
Leave the forest for giant heather and climb onto the Shira Ridge, with the first views of Kibo, then descend gently to Shira 1 Camp on the plateau. About six to seven hours.
Day 3 · Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
An easier day crossing the Shira Plateau east to Shira 2 Camp, with optional detours to Shira Cathedral for wide views. This short, gentle stage is valuable for acclimatization.
Day 4 · Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp (3,900m)
Climb to the Lava Tower (4,630 m) for lunch, then descend through giant groundsels into the Barranco Valley and Barranco Camp, following the 'climb high, sleep low' principle. Six to seven hours.
Day 5 · Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Scramble up the Barranco Wall and traverse beneath the Southern Icefields, crossing the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp, about four to five hours.
Day 6 · Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)
A short climb through alpine desert to Barafu Camp, three to four hours. Rest, eat early and prepare for the summit night.
Day 7 · Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp (3,080m)
Leave around midnight and climb by headlamp to Stella Point on the crater rim and on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) for sunrise. Descend to Barafu for a rest, then down to Mweka Camp – a long but unforgettable day.
Day 8 · Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m)
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
